Limited Technology

I am somewhat ashamed to note that my last blog entry described a trip I went on in August and it's now mid-October. Why have I neglected this blog for so long?

1. Avoidance (Let's be honest--we're talking about me). I had nothing to talk about that I wanted to share with the entire world at once.

2. A technology cramp. I moved at the end of August to a new apartment (with two great roommates--no complaints there!), but my table, which I had used as a computer table is now the kitchen table, and although I've been meaning to buy an actual computer desk, I've been avoiding that, too. So now when I'm at home working (I use that term loosely) on my computer, I'm sitting on my bed with the keyboard resting on my knees and the computer monitor on top of my dresser with the mouse either beside it (which makes it difficult to switch easily between clicking and typing) or next to me on the bed (which can be a problem because the cord is so short that whenever I shift my weight the mouse crashes to the floor). So I just avoid using the computer for doing anything besides checking email and printing off my assignments for Fields and Galois Theory.

To add to the technology crisis, we did not have a TV for the first month we lived here. When we finally got a TV (it took us over a week to actually plug it in and set up the VCR and DVD), I still didn't watch it much becuase we only get two channels (we opted not to go for cable). I don't like the news broadcasters on the channels we get (they seem stupid and more than likely to say FebUary), so I don't even know much about current events.

In addition, our new townhouse is much closer to school than my last house, so I've been walking or biking almost everyday. My car gets neglected for souch long periods of time that the tires begin to deflate.

But this technological deprivation is good. I have so much time. I have only played five games of Hexic, three games of Cubis, and no other computer/internet game more than once since I moved in. I have not watched reality TV at all. I think I'm getting in better shape from all the walking and biking to and from school. In the last two months I've played my flute more than 10 times as much as I did all of last year (which to be honest is still not that much). I'm reading Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham (pretty good) and I just bought The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon (that's just for you, Laura). I still can't cook successfully, but I'm trying.

But I do need a desk. And I like watching movies. And I like to know what's going on in the world from the perspective of the BBC. And I'm definitely driving to school in the winter. So this state of technological deprivation might not be allowed to continue, but I'll enjoy it for now (and apologize for the lack of emails and blog entries)!
