Chilly

So recently it's been a little cold around here, getting down to -27 C last night (that's -16.6 F for all you Americans). While Canadians usually know to stay inside in this kind of weather, my crazy British friend Laurence decided that to truly experience the Canadian cold, he ought to sleep outside. So he did...on a picnic table which he covered with cardboard from the recycling bin and a dirty blanket (he was preparing for his trip to Algonquin in February, although I'm assuming that he'll at least have a tent then). He obviously survived and thus wins the prize for the craziest activity of the week.

My friend Luis wins a prize for creativity. He is a TA for calculus and he designed a form that everyone in the class had to fill out. They had to draw a picture of themselves, do some other stuff, and then answer the question of how much they liked calculus by a) they loved it, b) something amusing that I can't remember, or c) they thought it should be called cal-cool-us. He was disappointed that no-one chose c). He was most impressed by the student who put down "d) not as much as you" because Luis "hates" calculus (he obviously didn't tell them that).

Other prizes will be awarded as I see fit.

Oh, I am taking Salsa lessons, which I thought that all of you who know me would appreciate. I have two things to say:
1) I did not hate the first day like I thought I would. I even enjoyed it.
2) I feel much more self-confident. I decided to be a guy for the night and so I danced with just about every girl there, which was weird, but I have to say that I think I have a much more attractive back than any of them, which definitely improved my mood. :)

That's all for today.

Randomness

"Quote...Unquote" vs. "Quote...Endquote"--Which one is correct?
Aha! After gloriously surfing the internet I uncovered this wonderful website, which has the answer to this and other questions of import:
http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/nonerrors.html

(One of) the stupidest thing(s) I did last week:
It took me three days to figure out that my shower was working again. (I realize that the intelligent thing to do when a plumber comes is to assume that he fixed whatever he was supposed to fix, but for some reason I didn't believe that he'd actually fixed it--hence the appearance on my stupid list.)

I watched two movies this weekend: Ocean's 12 and Spanglish.
  • The beginning and middle of Ocean's 12 was disappointing, although I liked the twist at the end. I also like the Julia Roberts bit.
  • Spanglish was pretty good except for the sex scene. I hate sex scenes and this is a bad one. I wish I understood Spanish.

For those of you who are interested, Social Stephanie has made another guest appearance. Two new friends as of this weekend! I think it helps that I have a car and they don't--it means they have to be nice to me if they want a ride home.

My new friends (fellow graduate students, although they are in Computer Science, not math) suggested this website: http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/comics.php

I will finish that earlier blog eventually, but first I have to think of things that make me happy. I think I'm usually happy for no reason at all...I just smile unconsciously and in return I get creepy winks and smirks from 55-year-old men.

I considered putting up a list of things that annoyed and irritated me, but I thought that might be dangerous.

That's all for now.
